Clothes, Colors & Shoes: When it comes to colors in general, try to dress everyone in shades of a similar color, Try and avoid bold stripes, bold patterns, or anything that is too distracting, a subtle pattern is fine. White shirts are good if everyone is wearing white or it beneath a jacket/sweater. Note: medium or darker colors tend to be slenderizing. Keep jewelry simple, conservative is always a safe choice. Remember - we want to see your face - not your clothing.
(A bright or intense orange color is definitely one to avoid)

Coordinating Clothes: The night before your portrait try laying out all the clothes the family will wear, ask yourself if the clothes match or if there is something that just doesn't belong or is too distracting. Choose a color theme (solid colors are best) and clothing style that are representative of your family. Everyone should bring a change in shirt so the photographer can have a choice.

Consider who the portrait is for and where the portrait will be displayed and that should help guide your sense of formal attire vs. more casual.

Hands: Hands are often included in portraits, so have clean nails and ladies to avoid bright nail colors.

Makeup: Remember to bring along some makeup (lipstick and powder) for touch ups. Oil free make up is best as the oil based make up tends to make it look like you are perspiring. Glitter tends to have the same effect as the oil based make-up. Ladies - avoid distinctive eye shadow or heavy makeup coverage.

Props: Household pets and special props such as musical instruments, etc., are always welcome.

Last but not least: Remember to get a good night sleep for that fresh look
